The main purpose of the Directorate: South African Agricultural Food, Quarantine and Inspection Services (SAAFQIS) laboratories in Pretoria and Stellenbosch are to audit fruit, vegetables, grain and specific other products for compliance with maximum residue limits (MRL's). These are either prescribed by internationally agreed standards or are the specific requirements set by individual importing countries. This regulatory analysis is in compliance with South African international agreements and the monitoring is focused on a wide spectrum of substances that includes pesticide residues from:
- Registered spraying programmes
- Listed in the requirements of importing countries, as well as
- Banned / illegal substances.
